Symmetrical Sticker Pictures

The winter school holidays have just started here in South Australia and it's cold and windy outside. Whilst the girls are probably happy to play Minecraft for hours, I am not. Today I set up this simple invitation for them using Ed Emberley's Picture Pie drawing book to create some symmetrical artwork from stickers. It's an invitation that is easy to set up using a printable template to guide them and some cheap colourful stickers. Whilst Picture Pie is a great inspiration, it's not essential to creating your own artwork from stickers.

Today's invitation caters for mixed ages (5-10yrs) so I've borrowed a clever idea from Kate over at PicklebumsShe used a template to help make her contact paper mandalas symmetrical. I created a simple template to help even the youngest one with their symmetry. You can download my printable by clicking here.

I also printed some pages from the Picture Pie book and put them on the table as inspiration. There are many ideas in this book but today I just thought we focus on making symmetrical pictures.  Great for older students working on fractions too as Relief Teaching Ideas has written about.

For ease of viewing, I printed three pages then just sticky-taped them together so they would stand up on the table for all to see.  Better than passing the book around.

The invitation was then ready to show the kids and they didn't take long to get started making their own artwork.

As always, the difference in their ages makes for quite different work. As you can see from this next shot, the youngest one chose to just make a picture with the stickers. This activity is also a great fine motor strengthening exercise for smaller hands.

The best part? I sat down and made some too.

I can see us returning to this activity as the book has plenty of ideas. That and when I did a bit of a tidy up earlier today I found I had amassed very generous pile of stickers... oops!
