BACK TO SCHOOL READY - ORGANISING A NEW CLASSROOM

This term I'm very excited to have the opportunity to set up my own classroom for the first time. Usually I've borrowed someone else's classroom when I've filled in for them but this time I was greeted with pretty much a blank slate so I thought I'd give you a peek at how I've set things up to start the year.

DIY CARDBOARD VORTEX CANNON

Today's #easyplayidea is another cardboard creation but the idea I'm sharing isn't mine. It was actually a Christmas gift made by my brother-in-law who is a high school science teacher. With his permission, I'm re-sharing his idea here. He called it a vortex cannon, the rest of the family called it 'cool'!

DIY CARDBOARD DOLLSHOUSE

Today's #easyplayidea is another simple one - a DIY cardboard house! I've made several of these now and you really are only limited by your imagination as you can make it any shape or size. It can be a house like the one we've made or a castle or a city skyline or a mountainous hideout, anything really and the best bit? When you're finished playing, it can be stored flat, out of the way ready for next time.

DESIGN YOUR OWN ZOO PLAYMAT

Today we had an extra visitor at our house and we made up a batch of sandy cloud dough but after quickly realising our play tub was not quite big enough for four pairs of hands, I decided to set up another simple invitation for them all to enjoy. Our #easyplayidea today was to create their own zoo playmat - a perfect activity for mixed ages.

SALT PAINTING WINDOW ART

Our #easyplayidea series continues today with some multi-step process art. I've done this art activity a few times with preschoolers but not with my own children. Salt painting is simple to do and another great way to explore how different colours are made much like our #easyplayidea from yesterday

A fun hands-on way for children to learn how secondary colours are made from primary colours!

We're all about finding simple playful ways to learn - ideas you can do just as easily at home as in the classroom.

Over the past few days we've been sharing some easy play ideas which use only few materials and are simple to set up at home. You can read one, two, three, four and five later. Today we did one of our favourite activities - mixing colours.

DIY CARDBOARD COOKIES FOR PROMPTING PLAY

After the arrival of ants in pursuit of left-over crumbs ended play outside in our new play tent, today's #easyplayidea involves some 3D paint and recycled cardboard to create some puffy paint to decorate cardboard cookies - perfect for pretend play. No ants invited! It's easy to mix up from ingredients most people would already have at home.

INVITATION TO PLAY - LANDS OF ICE + SNOW

I read recently in a book about Brain Rules(affiliate link) I was gifted at Christmas that people don't pay attention to boring things, that you've got seconds to grab their attention and only 10 minutes to keep it, meaning every 9 minutes and 59 seconds you have to do something to regain their attention and keep it. Today's #easyplayidea is such an activity!

CHALK RESIST ART OUTSIDE

We continued our easy play ideas outside today by using an old technique in a new way. We started our summer of easy play ideas yesterday with some pretend play which you can read about by clicking here. You can also follow our simple invitations to play on Instagram under the hashtag #easyplayidea. Today, using some painters tape, I invited the kids to create some resist art outside on the concrete. So simple and easy.

PARTS OF SPEECH - HOW TO INTRODUCE NOUNS

Teaching ideas and resources to use in class when introducing nouns
 in Kindergarten and First Grade.

When starting to teach the different parts of speech, most programs start by teaching common nouns as it is the least abstract concept to teach kindergarten aged children.

Children are already able to name what they can see around them by this stage.

Nouns are the names we give people, places and things. Teaching the concept of nouns is just putting a label to something they already do.
