Games can be a fun way to incorporate learning. And in the Early Years when you are trying to develop phonemic awareness, finding engaging ways to practice the same concepts over and over can be tricky.
As teachers we know that being able to identify and produce rhyme is one of the components of phonemic awareness for preschoolers. Even into elementary school, young children need plenty of opportunity to hear and make words that rhyme.
Reading great rhyming books is a must for this age group as is providing plenty of hands on practice in class. Literacy centres are an easy way to do this.

Game play in our literacy centres is common. My students love playing games - I Spy, Kaboom!, BINGO, Snap!
But before we use any resource as a literacy centre we introduce it during class time to the whole group.

It's designed with students who are more capable at producing rhyme in mind as they are trying to match a word on their BINGO card that rhymes with the word that's called. I've only used CVC words to make it easier for them to match the rhyming words.
For example, the word 'HAT' is called. A student looks at the six different words on their BINGO mat - rip, mat, bed, pin, cap, top.
'MAT' rhymes with 'HAT' so they can cover that word on their BINGO card. The winner is the first one to cover all six words.
Focusing on short vowel words, this fun Rhyming CVC BINGO game can be played with your whole class or as a literacy centre activity.
