PARTS OF SPEECH - TEACHING NOUNS USING BOOM CARDS

BOOM Cards 👉🏼 a hands-on digital resource perfect for teaching nouns
 in Kindergarten and First Grade.

BOOM cards are only something I've heard of recently in teaching circles but after having a look at how they work both in and out of the classroom, they're definitely a tool worth considering for your class.

A lot of the teaching and learning we do in the Early Years is repetitive and I don't mean that in a 'this-is-boring-we've-already-done-this' kind of way. Concepts, particularly more abstract ones, can take young children a while to learn and comprehend which means teaching and then re-teaching material in new ways to ensure every child understands before you move on.

Finding ways to keep this practice varied and engaging might be made easier by using a resource like BOOM cards.

I've written before about how I introduce and teach nouns in kindergarten and first grade. You can read the blog post here

Identifying the different parts of speech like nouns, verbs and adjectives can be a difficult task for many young people so after intentionally teaching the concepts I will include some revision activities in our literacy centre rotations to help ensure the ideas 'stick'.

If you're lucky enough to be a bring your own device school or have access to a pod of iPads or computers, using digital resources in your literacy centres might be a way to keep your groups engaged and working (mostly) independently on tasks while you support your reading or writing groups. BOOM cards can help you achieve this and still provide you with feedback on what your students are doing while working in their small groups.

BOOM cards are simple to use. Each child can work through the task at their own pace and receive immediate feedback while they are working.

I created some Noun Sorting BOOM cards for our literacy groups and you can see how easy they are to use independently. After being introduced to the topic in the first two slides, children can then work their way through the individual cards.

After clicking on person/place/thing, they hit submit and see their answer on the screen.

When a child selects the wrong answer, they will see this on screen and be able to try again before moving on. They also have the option to skip if they are stuck.

And the best part about BOOM cards is they can be used in class or at home so if you're a school who sets homework, BOOM cards might become your favourite task for home as they're self-marking and depending on your membership level with BOOM Learning, you can collect data from these tasks.

These BOOM cards are a duplicate of our Noun Clip Cards pack but require no prep and no storage in between use. Such a time saver!
