BOOM CARD SYLLABLE RACE GAME

Use this syllable board game to allow children to practice identifying and counting syllables while playing a fun interactive game they can play in class in small groups and at home with family for distance learning.

Distance learning has us all looking for new ways to teach our children and BOOM Cards has certainly made the task easier. But in the Early Years, screen time has long been a point of contention so do we really want our children sitting down in front of a screen more?

It can be a difficult balance to get right but I think this game of counting syllables might be a great task for learning at home or in the classroom while getting the balance right.
Combining the use of technology and the traditional board game, Syllable Race helps children practice counting syllables correctly - one of the phonological awareness skills learnt in Kindergarten.

We know being able to count the number of syllables in words is one of the first literacy skills children learn but it's importance in being able to spell unfamiliar words later in school makes it a skill that needs to be mastered in these Early Years.

Counting syllables correctly is turned into a game with this Syllable Race board game. It can be used with an iPad/tablet (internet connection is needed) or the provided calling cards.

The rules are simple. Children take it in turns to count the number of syllable in the word pictured and then move their counter the same number of spaces on the game board.

The first one to reach the end is the winner.

I do think technology has a place in our classrooms. Here the best part about using the BOOM cards as your calling cards is that they are self-checking meaning the child gets immediate feedback about their answer without a teacher or parent's help.

It also adds a gamified element to what otherwise is a traditional board game 👉🏼  something children and their parents will appreciate when learning at home as engagement will be easier to maintain than sitting a worksheet in front of them.

I like also the idea of this game bringing families together while they undertake distance learning.

As always I love a resource that can do double duty.

The BOOM cards can be used just to practice counting by individual students and depending on your membership level with BOOM Learning you, as their teacher, may also be able to collect data on their school work at home. Something we know will be challenging if we're social distancing and teaching remotely for an extended time.

The game pack also includes a paper version of the calling cards too so once you're back in class or if you don't have a device or internet access, the game can be played with those instead.

If you're having to send work home and your families have internet access, I would suggest just printing out the game board to send home along with the link for the BOOM cards.

The cards can also be used for sorting with our FREE Syllable Sorting Mats as another literacy centre activity. You can grab those from here.
